Mariah Carey, Chubby Checker, Cyndi Lauper, OutKast, and Phish are among the nominees for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for 2025. The list also features two musical sibling groups, the Black Crowes and Oasis, known for their public disputes and recent comebacks.
The Hall disclosed the 14 performer nominees on Wednesday, which include Bad Company, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Maná, Soundgarden, and the White Stripes.
This year, eight of the 14 nominees are on the ballot for the first time: Bad Company, the Black Crowes, Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker, Billy Idol, Maná, OutKast, and Phish.
Both Carey and Checker have made significant contributions to music and culture. Carey boasts 19 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100, while Checker’s “The Twist” and “Let’s Twist Again” are iconic tracks in rock ‘n’ roll history.
Oasis was a leading British group in the 1990s, known for songs like “Wonderwall” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger,” characterized by their anthemic choruses and the dynamic between brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher.
In a similar vein, the Black Crowes blend Southern boogie, blues harmonica, glam rock, and harmonies reminiscent of the ’70s, starting with their debut album “Shake Your Money Maker.” For many years, brothers Chris and Rich Robinson were estranged.
Lauper became a sensation in the 1980s with tracks such as “Time After Time” and “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” later earning a Tony Award for “Kinky Boots.” OutKast, comprising André 3000 and Big Boi, has won six Grammys and is lauded for their innovative approach to hip-hop.
The 2025 inductees will be announced in late April, along with recipients of three special committee awards: Musical Influence, Musical Excellence, and the Ahmet Ertegun Non-Performer Award.
To be eligible for induction, artists must have released their first commercial recording at least 25 years prior. The induction ceremony is set to occur in Los Angeles this fall.
Over 1,200 artists, historians, and music industry professionals will cast votes for the nominees. Selection criteria encompass an artist’s influence on peers, career longevity, and innovation in style and technique.
In the previous year, Mary J. Blige, Cher, Foreigner, A Tribe Called Quest, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, the Dave Matthews Band, and guitarist-singer Peter Frampton were all inducted.
