White House advisor Peter Navarro stated that he anticipates President Donald Trump’s tariffs on imported products could yield $6 trillion in revenue over the next ten years. However, many economists argue that the costs of these tariffs will ultimately be borne by American companies and consumers through increased prices, potentially leading to the largest tax increase in US history.

Here’s what else you should know to Get Up to Speed and On with Your Day.

As the first major elections since President Trump took office unfold, attention turns to key races in Wisconsin and Florida. Wisconsin voters are heading to the polls today to determine the ideological direction of the state’s Supreme Court. Democrats are supporting liberal judge Susan Crawford, while Trump, billionaire Elon Musk, and Republicans are backing conservative judge Brad Schimel. Although the election is technically nonpartisan, this contest has morphed into the most expensive judicial election in US history. In Florida, elections are taking place to fill the seats left by former GOP Representatives Matt Gaetz and Mike Waltz. Should Republicans win in the Sunshine State, it would expand the GOP’s slim majority in the House.

Senator Cory Booker visited the Senate floor at 7 p.m. last night to voice his objections to the actions of President Trump and his administration. “In just 71 days, the president has caused considerable damage to Americans’ safety, financial security, and the foundational principles of our democracy,” the New Jersey Democrat stated. “These are not normal times in America.” During his lengthy address, Booker read letters from concerned citizens and emphasized the urgent need for legislative action. He also highlighted potential cuts to Medicaid and Social Security, the elimination of funding for scientific research, the far-right’s campaign against immigrants, the removal of historical education related to women and people of color, and challenges to free speech in educational institutions. As of this morning, Booker was still delivering his speech.

Cory Booker: The US is ‘in crisis’

Today, China commenced military exercises surrounding Taiwan, labeling them as “a stern warning and forceful deterrent against ‘Taiwan Independence’ separatist elements,” according to a statement from the People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command. These operations, which involve multiple branches including the army, navy, air force, and rocket force, come shortly after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s visit to Asia, where he pledged to counter “China’s aggression” in the Indo-Pacific. Taiwanese officials have condemned the drills, referring to them as “reckless,” “irresponsible,” and “totally unacceptable.”

The White House has concluded its investigation into senior national security officials who discussed a potential US military strike on Houthi forces in Yemen during a group chat on Signal, which inadvertently included a journalist. On Monday, press secretary Karoline Leavitt refrained from disclosing any specific actions taken, but no officials—including national security adviser Mike Waltz and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth—are expected to be removed from their posts. Jeffrey Goldberg, editor-in-chief of The Atlantic and a participant in the chat, characterized the incident as a significant breach of national security. “Had this occurred six months ago with figures such as Tony Blinken or Jake Sullivan discussing an imminent strike in the Middle East, I don’t believe Pete Hegseth and Donald Trump would dismiss it so lightly.”

The Trump administration acknowledged that it mistakenly deported a man from Maryland to El Salvador, where he is currently housed in a notorious mega-prison. An immigration judge granted Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia protective status in 2019 after he fled violence from gangs in El Salvador. In a court filing first reported on Monday by The Atlantic, the administration stated that Abrego Garcia was detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in mid-March due to his alleged connection to MS-13. His defense team insists he has never been affiliated with the gang. The filing also revealed that ICE “was aware of his protection from removal to El Salvador,” attributing his deportation to “an administrative error.” Now, in Salvadoran custody, the administration claims it is unable to facilitate his return.
