Daniel Jones Released by New York Giants After Emotional Farewell

Daniel Jones

The New York Giants have officially released quarterback Daniel Jones, marking the end of a four-year chapter for the 27-year-old with the organization. The announcement, made Friday, came a day after Jones delivered a heartfelt farewell to fans and the team. In a statement, Giants owner John Mara revealed that the decision was mutual, with Jones requesting the release.

“Daniel came to see me this morning and asked if we would release him. We mutually agreed that would be best for him and for the team,” Mara said. “Daniel has been a great representative of our organization. His handling of this situation yesterday exemplifies just that. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”

Daniel Jones Is A Costly Break for the Giants

Daniel Jones’ departure brings significant financial consequences for the team. His four-year, $160 million contract, signed in 2023, includes $81 million in guarantees. Releasing him now saddles the Giants with a $69.3 million dead-cap hit for 2024, exceeding his $47.1 million cap charge had he stayed.

However, the team opted to absorb the full hit upfront, avoiding a June 1 designation that would have split the dead money across two years. This move frees $19.4 million in cap space for 2024 but ensures the financial impact concludes by 2025. If Jones is claimed by another team, they would inherit the remaining $13.8 million of his salary.

Jones’ release marks a turning point for the Giants as they move on from a quarterback once seen as their future. Despite moments of promise, the team and Jones failed to find consistent success during his tenure. As he seeks a new opportunity, the Giants face the challenge of finding their next franchise quarterback while managing the ripple effects of this high-profile departure.
