Controversial Irish MMA athlete Conor McGregor is set to meet US President Donald Trump on St. Patrick’s Day in Washington DC.
He appeared at the White House press briefing podium on Monday alongside press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who announced that the meeting was scheduled for later that day.
Ms. Leavitt expressed that she “couldn’t think of a more fitting guest to join us on St. Patrick’s Day.”
Just last week, during a meeting at the White House with Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister) Micheál Martin, President Trump commended McGregor for his tattoos.
In 2024, a woman who alleged that McGregor raped her in a hotel in Dublin successfully secured damages in a civil case against him.
A jury found him liable for assault and directed him to pay over €248,000 (£206,000).
On Monday, Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported that McGregor stated he intended to “highlight the issues facing the people of Ireland.”
He has previously voiced his concerns regarding Ireland’s immigration and asylum policies.
Commenting on McGregor’s White House visit, Taoiseach Micheál Martin posted on X: “St. Patrick’s Day globally celebrates community, humanity, friendship, and togetherness.
“Conor McGregor’s comments are incorrect and do not embody the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, nor do they represent the views of the Irish people.”
The fighter was also present at President Trump’s inauguration in January.
