UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with European leaders at an urgent summit in Paris on Monday, as reported by Britain’s PA media. This comes in response to the recent strain on transatlantic relations following US President Donald Trump’s discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin while advocating for a peace settlement concerning the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“The UK is committed to ensuring solidarity between the US and Europe. We cannot let any rifts in our alliance divert our attention from the external threats we face,” Starmer stated in a release from Downing Street on Saturday.
He added, “This is a pivotal moment for our national security where we must confront the current global realities and the dangers posed by Russia. It’s evident that Europe has to assume a more substantial role in NATO as we collaborate with the United States to safeguard Ukraine’s future and confront the threats from Russia.”
This follows comments made by Trump’s special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, who mentioned on Saturday that European officials would not be included in the negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
At the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski revealed that French President Emmanuel Macron had proposed a summit of European leaders in Paris.
Sikorski also expressed his expectation that the European leaders would address the situation “in a very serious manner.”
France has yet to officially announce the summit.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
