Greenland Dismisses Trump’s Claim Over Territory: ‘The US Won’t Get That’ | Politics News

Greenland’s Prime Minister addresses Trump’s assertions about Greenland, emphasizing the territory’s right to self-determination.

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, Greenland’s newly elected Prime Minister, firmly stated that he will not surrender the territory to the United States following President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about potentially annexing the expansive Arctic area.

“President Trump claims that the United States is acquiring Greenland. Let me clarify: The United States will not acquire it. We do not belong to anyone. We shape our own destiny,” Nielsen expressed in a Facebook post on Sunday.

Trump remarked to NBC News on Saturday that he had “absolutely” contemplated the idea of annexing Greenland. “We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100 percent,” he reiterated.

Tensions heightened between the two nations after U.S. Vice President JD Vance visited a military installation in Greenland, accusing Denmark of not adequately safeguarding the strategically important island.

Vance asserted that the U.S. could provide enhanced security for the region, which holds considerable geopolitical significance.

In response, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen voiced his discontent with the tone of the U.S. administration’s criticisms.

“We do not appreciate the tone used. This is not how you communicate with your close allies,” Rasmussen declared in a video shared on social media, reiterating Denmark’s dedication to Arctic security and its readiness to collaborate with the U.S.

Despite the diplomatic friction, Trump remained resolute, stating to NBC News, “I never rule out military action” concerning Greenland.

Rasmussen, however, emphasized that Denmark and the U.S. maintain a strong alliance, despite the prevailing disagreements over the matter.

Greenland, a semi-autonomous region of Denmark, is a pivotal issue as Trump seeks to enhance U.S. influence in the area for national security purposes.
