Washington — A number of Democratic women in Congress donned bright pink outfits for President Trump’s speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday, symbolizing their opposition to the president.
Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández from New Mexico, who heads the Democratic Women’s Caucus, mentioned to Time magazine that the color stands for “our protest of Trump’s policies which adversely affect women and families.”
“Pink represents power and protest,” she stated. “It’s time to intensify our resistance and confront Trump loudly and decisively.”
The 96-member assembly discussed their dissent against the president outside the U.S. Capitol ahead of the address on Tuesday, where Leger Fernández emphasized, “Women cannot afford Trump.”
“He costs us significantly in terms of finances, health, lives, and safety,” she continued. “From infancy to old age, this man and the Republican agenda are destructive for women in America. We want the world to know we are in protest, we are powerful, we are donned in pink, and we are opposed.”
During Trump’s initial address to a joint session of Congress in 2017, Democratic women wore white to raise awareness about women’s rights. Last year, during then-President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address, caucus members similarly opted for white to highlight reproductive rights.
“Our message is unequivocal: women deserve the right to access healthcare vital for managing their own lives and futures. This entails that women, not politicians, should decide when and how to start or expand their families, including access to birth control, abortion, and IVF,” the group affirmed in a statement in 2024.
