Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau celebrated on social media after Canada triumphed over the USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off hockey tournament finale.
Following Connor McDavid’s overtime goal, which secured a 3-2 victory for Canada in Boston, Trudeau expressed his thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau stated.
The remark was brief yet potent, unmistakably directed towards President Donald Trump.
Trump has previously suggested the notion of annexing Canada and, in a Super Bowl interview, indicated that “Canada would be much better off being the 51st state.” These comments, alongside an ongoing tariff dispute, have contributed to the booing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” in Canada.
Opinion: U.S. athletes are now perceived as unpopular Americans, largely due to President Trump’s influence.
This became especially noticeable during the 4 Nations Face-Off match between the two nations held in Montreal, where some U.S. fans reciprocated during the Canadian anthem in Boston on Thursday night.
The Canadian anthem, “O Canada,” did not endure a second round of boos as Canadians rejoiced in their victory.
Although Trump did not attend the game on Thursday, he did speak with the team in the locker room following their morning practice.
