State Senator Mallory McMorrow of Michigan has officially announced her campaign for the 2026 U.S. Senate seat as a Democrat.

“Washington needs fresh leadership. I’m running for Senate to be that leader,” stated McMorrow, who serves Michigan’s eighth district.

She is among the first candidates to enter the race following the announcement of current U.S. Senator Gary Peters’ decision to retire at the end of his term. Her intention to run has been a topic of discussion for several weeks.

According to her campaign, “In the U.S. Senate, she will cut through the political theatrics, confront (President) Trump, and work tirelessly to uphold our rights and freedoms while providing hardworking Michiganders with the support they need to thrive.”

McMorrow was first elected to the state legislature in 2018 and was appointed Senate Majority Whip during her second term. Her district encompasses parts of Detroit, Royal Oak, Beverly Hills, as well as all of Berkley, Birmingham, and Oak Park.

Her legislative achievements include passing gun safety laws, increasing wages, and successfully removing an abortion ban from Michigan’s statutes. She also played a role in abolishing the “tampon tax” in Michigan and supported struggling businesses in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Her national recognition grew following an impassioned floor speech in Lansing in 2022, where she addressed political attacks directed at her and her colleagues.

McMorrow holds a bachelor’s degree in industrial design from the University of Notre Dame and has over ten years of experience in product design, media, and advertising across various companies.

She resides in Royal Oak with her husband and daughter.
