MISD Honored for Outstanding Financial Management Excellence

MIDLAND – The Office of Finance at Midland ISD has received two prestigious statewide awards for excellence in financial management and purchasing operations. The Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) honored MISD with the Award of Excellence in Financial Management and the Award of Merit for Purchasing Operations, making it one of only 28 districts in Texas to achieve both accolades.

“These accolades reflect our commitment to transparency, accountability, and stewardship of financial resources,” stated Tucker Durham, MISD Chief Financial Officer, in a news release. “Our finance and purchasing teams work tirelessly to manage taxpayer funds responsibly, and we take great pride in being acknowledged for our efforts.”

The Award of Excellence in Financial Management, sponsored by Frontline Education, was created in 2020 to recognize districts that follow professional standards, best practices, and innovations in financial management and reporting. This is the first time MISD has been awarded this honor, joining a select group of only 32 districts statewide to earn this recognition this year. Applicants must show compliance with rigorous financial guidelines set by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) Financial Accountability System Resource Guide (FASRG).

Moreover, the Award of Merit for Purchasing Operations honors school districts that exemplify professional standards in procuring goods and services. This year marks the fifth consecutive year that MISD’s Purchasing Department has received this award, placing it among only 80 districts statewide recognized for 2025. Each year, TASBO’s Purchasing & Supply Management Research Committee reassesses and updates award criteria to align with the latest best practices in school purchasing operations.

“We are impressed by these organizations, which have undergone a rigorous process of documenting their districts’ policies and procedures meticulously,” remarked TASBO Executive Director Tracy Ginsburg. “They have not only demonstrated effective monitoring of spending, improved budgeting, implemented controls, and enhanced financial reporting, but they have also shared their best practices with peers throughout Texas, empowering more educational entities to make better use of taxpayer funds.”

MISD will officially receive both awards during the TASBO annual conference on February 26.
