The two-time US Open winner Naomi Osaka was defeated by Danielle Collins on Tuesday night in the first round of the Major 2022.
The American triumphed in an hour and 34 minutes, 7-6(5), 6-3. Osaka jumped out to an early lead, leading 3-0 in the opening set of the encounter. Collins started to pin Naomi Osaka back as she found her range, though. After that, both players maintained their position, and the set was still on serve.
Naomi Osaka lost a mini-break early enough in the tie-break for Collins to gain the momentum she required. A few points later, the former world number one got the mini-break back, but she was unable to keep it. Collins did err on her first of two set points she had in the tie-break, but she won the match on her second — Osaka’s serve.
Danielle Collins Secures Win Against Naomi Osaka
In the second set, Naomi Osaka once more secured an early break but was unable to maintain it. After defeating the Japanese in the eighth game, Collins had a chance to win the set. Collins saved two break back possibilities in the ninth game while attempting to serve for the match before converting on her first match point.
With 23 victories to Osaka’s 25 and 24 unforced mistakes to the latter’s 19, Collins finished the match. The two’s ability to win points at the net and capitalize on break points was where they distinguished themselves most from one another.
While her opponent won seven of nine points, Osaka only won two of the six points she played at the net. Similarly, Collins successfully converted three of her five break points on Osaka’s serve while Osaka only succeeded on two of the eight break points that were presented to her.
