Washington — One U.S. citizen detained in Belarus was released on Wednesday, according to the U.S. government’s top hostage negotiator.
Adam Boehler, the U.S. envoy for hostages, informed UJ that the identity of the individual “needs to remain private at this time.” He also mentioned that several other individuals were released under the agreement.
This announcement follows the release of Marc Fogel, an American educator who has been imprisoned in Russia since 2021, by the Kremlin.
President Trump indicated on Tuesday that another American who was being held abroad would also be released Wednesday, stating, “someone else is being released tomorrow that you will know of,” without providing further details.
Fogel met with President Trump at the White House late Tuesday after returning to the U.S.
The Biden administration only recently classified Fogel’s detention as wrongful, years after his arrest on drug-related charges in Moscow. His family contended that Fogel was simply carrying 17 grams of marijuana for the purpose of alleviating chronic back pain.
