Washington — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has postponed promotional events for his upcoming book, citing security issues due to backlash from Democratic voters over his decision to support a Republican plan to prevent a government shutdown.

“Given the security concerns, Senator Schumer’s book events will be rescheduled,” said Risa Heller, a spokesperson for Schumer, in a statement released on Monday.

Schumer, a Democrat from New York, had planned multiple events this week in Maryland, New York City, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and California to promote his book, “Antisemitism in America: A Warning,” which will be released on Tuesday.

The postponements are occurring in anticipation of protests at some events in response to Schumer’s recent vote to advance a temporary measure that funds the government through September. Senate Republicans required at least eight Democratic votes to pass a procedural motion before the bill could move forward. Schumer voted to advance the bill but ultimately voted against its final passage, which did not require Democratic backing.

Initially, Schumer indicated that Democrats would resist the partisan continuing resolution, yet he claimed that a government shutdown could lead to greater harm.

“Certainly, the Republican proposal is a poor choice,” Schumer stated last week. “But I believe that allowing Donald Trump to gain even more power through a government shutdown is an even worse choice.”
