Early Sunday, a man was shot by the Secret Service near the White House following an “armed confrontation” with law enforcement, according to a statement from the agency.
At the time of the incident, President Trump was not at the White House; he was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.
Earlier on Saturday, local police had relayed information to the Secret Service regarding a suicidal individual believed to be heading to Washington from Indiana. Around midnight, Secret Service agents found the individual’s parked car near 17th and F Streets, just a block from the White House. The agency reported a man was outside the vehicle.
As the officers approached, they observed that the man was armed, leading to a confrontation during which the Secret Service ultimately shot him, as stated by the agency.
The man was taken to a hospital, and his current condition remains unclear, according to the Secret Service. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among Secret Service personnel.
An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington.
