Saturday Night Live‘s Weekend Update focused on Donald Trump‘s address to a joint session of Congress this week, discussing his “bipolar” shift on tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico, as well as the unsuccessful test flight by Elon Musk‘s SpaceX.
Michael Che kicked off with, “President Trump spoke to a joint session of Congress and asserted that no president has altered government as swiftly as he has.” He then quipped, “Yeah, and no one has changed airport security as fast as bin Laden.”
Che made a humorous remark regarding one of Trump’s executive orders that prohibits transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
“But if men can’t participate in women’s sports,” he questioned, “then what’s the explanation for soccer?”
Later on, Che discussed how Trump reversed his position on tariffs just two days after implementing them, due to worries from consumers and investors.
“It’s a clever political maneuver that experts refer to as ‘bipolar disorder,’” he jested.
“President Trump stated that the tariff on Canadian goods is aimed at curbing the influx of fentanyl, despite the fact that only 40 pounds of the drug was seized at the northern border last year. 40 pounds, that’s what, like two butt-fulls?”
Co-anchor Colin Jost chimed in, mentioning that some experts predict new car prices could surge by as much as $12,000, proposing a solution: “a free Tesla, since people seem to be tossing them away.”
On the subject of the Tesla CEO, Jost remarked that Elon Musk’s choice of outfit at this week’s cabinet meeting—wearing a suit instead of a t-shirt under a jacket—“serves as a refreshing reminder that bullying still works.”
Che made another jab at Musk regarding a recent SpaceX rocket launch that ended in failure. “On Thursday, Elon Musk’s SpaceX starship exploded just minutes after launch, which is how he ended up with all those kids,” he joked, referring to the announcement of Musk’s 14th known child last month.
