Tariff Hike Takes Effect: Musk Advocates for Zero Tariffs Between US and Europe

TAIPEI (Reuters) — Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te engaged with technology leaders on Saturday to strategize on the implications of new U.S. tariffs, assuring that Taiwan will maintain its competitive edge globally and protect its interests.

On Wednesday, President Donald Trump unveiled sweeping import tariffs… Notably, these tariffs do not extend to semiconductors, which are a key export for Taiwan.

Lai convened with the executives at his official residence to address the “global economic and trade challenges stemming from the reciprocal tariff policy,” as stated by his spokesperson Karen Kuo.

Kuo did not disclose the specific companies involved, indicating that multiple representatives from the information and communications technology (ICT) sector were in attendance.

Lai “aims to provide the utmost support to the industry, stabilize the economic landscape, ensure Taiwan’s industries remain globally competitive, and protect our national interests alongside the ongoing steady growth of our economy,” Kuo mentioned.

Taiwan hosts TSMC, the largest contract chip manufacturer in the world, which is a crucial supplier for firms such as Apple and Nvidia.
