Trump Increases Tariffs on Canadian Steel and Aluminum; Ontario Responds with Retaliation

In a recent social media update, President Trump announced an increase in tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, effective tomorrow. This decision is a reaction to Ontario’s 25% surcharge on electricity imported into the United States.

“Due to Ontario, Canada imposing a 25% Tariff on ‘Electricity’ entering the United States, I have directed my Secretary of Commerce to impose an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, bringing it to a total of 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM IMPORTED FROM CANADA, which is one of the highest tariff countries globally,” Trump stated. “This will take effect TOMORROW MORNING, March 12th.”

The President also mentioned his plan to declare a national emergency concerning electricity in the regions impacted by Canadian electricity imports. He warned of potential increased tariffs on Canadian automotive imports, aiming to “permanently close down the automobile manufacturing industry in Canada.”

Furthermore, he urged Canada to lower its tariffs on U.S. dairy products, following his previous warning about imposing new reciprocal tariffs on Canadian lumber and dairy goods.
