Trump News Brief: Judge Criticizes Officials on El Salvador Deportation; Harvard Stays Resolute | Trump Administration

A federal judge has delivered a stinging criticism of the Trump administration and is assessing whether officials have acted in contempt of court for not ensuring the return of a man who was wrongfully deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador.

Last week, the US Supreme Court mandated the Trump administration to facilitate the release and return of Kilmar Ábrego García, a refugee who has been a legal resident of the US for 25 years.

In addition, immigration officials reportedly detained and deported a 19-year-old Venezuelan, Merwil Gutiérrez, even after agents realized he was not the intended target of a focused operation.

Judge states Trump administration argument ‘not grounded in facts’

Judge Xinis, overseeing the Ábrego García case, rejected the Trump administration’s legal claims that it was powerless to ensure the return of the wrongly deported individual, arguing that the term “facilitate” does imply the need to actively pursue his return.

“Your interpretation is not supported by the facts,” Xinis stated. “I require facts.”
