On Saturday, President Trump encouraged Americans to “hang tough” while enjoying a round of golf as his baseline 10% universal tariffs took effect.
Trump stated that “every country” is eager to negotiate after his tariff declaration.
President Donald Trump mentioned that he received calls from “every country” following his tariff announcement.
In Washington, President Trump reiterated his message to Americans to “hang tough” and played golf for the second consecutive day as his universal 10% tariffs on foreign imports officially began.
Following the announcement of the extensive tariffs on Wednesday, the U.S. stock market experienced a significant drop, with the Dow Jones industrial average declining by 9.2%, the S&P 500 by 10.5%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq by 11.4%.
“THIS IS AN ECONOMIC REVOLUTION, AND WE WILL WIN. HANG TOUGH, it won’t be easy, but the end result will be historic,” Trump declared on Truth Social Saturday morning.
The Trump administration has now implemented a 10% minimum tariff on all incoming imports, with even higher reciprocal tariffs on the nation’s largest trade partners, such as China and the European Union. The baseline tariff took effect at 12:01 AM EDT on Saturday, with reciprocal tariffs set to begin on April 9.
Trump claimed that the elevated tariffs, which aim to reverse decades of globalization, are essential for revitalizing America’s dwindling domestic manufacturing and creating an equitable playing field with countries that impose tariffs on U.S. exports.
The tariffs include a staggering 34% on competitive Chinese imports, atop the already enforced 20% levies on Chinese goods, culminating in a total effective tariff of 54% on these imports.
In response to Trump’s tariffs, China escalated the trade war by imposing reciprocal 34% tariffs on all U.S. imports on Friday.
“China has suffered far greater than the USA—there’s no comparison,” Trump stated in his social media message on Saturday. “They, along with several other nations, have treated us very unfairly. We have been the world’s ‘whipping post’, but that’s no longer the case. We’re bringing back jobs and businesses like never before.”
Shortly before teeing off in a senior championship at the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida, situated just north of his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Trump made his post on Truth Social. This came as large crowds participated in over 1,000 “Hands Off” protests nationwide, including in Washington D.C., expressing their disapproval of Trump’s presidential decisions.
Trump also played golf on Friday at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach and attended a dinner at Trump Doral on Thursday, ahead of the LIV Golf Tournament.
Following the conclusion of Saturday’s round, the White House announced: “The President has won his second matchup at the Senior Club Championship in Jupiter, FL, and will proceed to the Championship Round tomorrow.”
