The United Kingdom, especially the financial stronghold of the City of London, has been criticized for being lenient towards Russian wealth. However, since Putin’s full invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the U.K. government has implemented a comprehensive range of sanctions against Russia. An additional batch of restrictions is anticipated from the U.K.’s Foreign Office later this afternoon.
On Monday, Security Minister Dan Jarvis informed Times Radio that the upcoming measures will “not only intensify pressure on Russia, the Russian elites, and Putin’s regime, but will also enhance our own national security, as these are not individuals coming here for positive purposes.”
This decision coincides with a surge of diplomatic engagements among Ukraine’s Western allies, as Trump advances unmediated Russian peace discussions, sidelining Ukraine.
Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron held discussions on Sunday evening prior to a summit to demonstrate their support for Kyiv. They concurred on the necessity of displaying “united leadership in support of Ukraine against Russian aggression,” with Macron scheduled to meet Trump on Monday.
The two leaders emphasized that “the U.K. and Europe must continue to escalate their efforts to address security needs.”
