Representative Al Green was removed from the House chamber for shouting at President Donald Trump during his joint address to Congress on Tuesday evening.
Green, a Democratic representative from Houston, Texas, stood up and exclaimed, “Mr. President, you don’t have a mandate!” shortly after Trump’s speech began, referencing proposed cuts to Medicaid.
His outburst was quickly drowned out by Republicans chanting “U-S-A!,” prompting House Speaker Mike Johnson to call for his removal from the chamber.
A staunch critic of President Trump, Green had previously advocated for the impeachment of the president during his initial term.
After leaving the chamber, Green told reporters he is prepared to face any consequences for his actions.
He reiterated his stance, stating that Trump “has no mandate to cut Medicaid” and mentioned he is working on articles for the impeachment of the president.
“This is the wealthiest nation in the world, yet many people lack access to adequate healthcare. We must improve this situation, especially when we’re on the verge of cutting Medicaid, which serves those in need,” he articulated.
Green was not alone in his protest; he was joined by several Democratic women who donned pink dresses to oppose President Trump’s policies, claiming that women are disproportionately affected by rising costs.
Additionally, some wore yellow and blue ties to express their support for Ukraine, reflecting the colors of its national flag.
Trump announced on Monday that he would pause all military aid to Ukraine, following a recent disagreement with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.
While most Democrats remained seated and quiet during Trump’s address, some displayed placards reading “false” in response to certain claims made by the president.
In contrast, Republican lawmakers were actively supportive, applauding frequently and intermittently chanting “U-S-A” throughout Trump’s speech.
