VAR is a commonly used term in modern football. The use of technology has become increasingly important in today’s fast-paced games. It is not possible for the human eye to detect every small detail in the game.

Thus, the VAR provides a sense of fairness to the game. Any wrong decisions can be instantly rectified using the technology. However, sometimes technology can also make mistakes. Such was the incident at the recently concluded Chelsea vs Brighton match.

Chelsea has been in hot pursuit of Manchester City in the EPL. The team started in a great way. The blues kept winning games until they hit a roadblock. Chelsea’s form has not been up to the mark recently. They have struggled to win games of late. The game against Brighton was a must-win game for Chelsea.

Manchester City is running away with the league at the moment. They have won back-to-back games and cemented their position at the top. City is currently eight points clear of Chelsea. The team was determined to win the match when the VAR controversy happened. Let us learn more about the game in detail below.

VAR-Gate Spoils Chelsea’s Party

The incident happened when Hudson Odoi wanted to lay a minus for his teammate. The ball was received by Odoi inside the penalty box. Odoi could have taken a shot at the goal himself but he decided otherwise.

He passed the ball to Mount, who would have had an easy tap in had the ball reached him. However, it was not to be. A Brighton defender came in between the pass and blocked it.

The block was later found to have been a handball. The ball hit the defender’s hands as it got deflected. This created a huge controversy with VAR. Everyone questioned why VAR was not used. Chelsea ultimately failed to win the match as it ended in a 1-1 draw.
