Vermont Lawmakers Expect Extended Session to Address Education Finance Reform

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) – Although the Vermont legislative session is still in its early stages, lawmakers are already suggesting that an extension into the summer may be necessary to effectively address education finance reform.

Last month, Governor Phil Scott unveiled an extensive education proposal aimed at dismantling supervisory unions and creating five regional school districts.

Conversations about Vermont’s climbing education expenses and potential reforms have long been ongoing in Montpelier. However, a significant rise in property taxes last year, statewide rejections of school budgets, and the GOP’s gains in November at the Statehouse have intensified discussions surrounding affordability.

Senate Republicans convened with Democratic leadership and reached a consensus that extending the session into late spring or summer will be necessary to formulate a bipartisan solution.
