Tuesday at Old Trafford, Manchester United defeated Charlton Athletic 3-0 to progress to the Carabao Cup semifinals. Marcus Rashford’s late brace, which he scored after coming off the bench to score in the final seconds of the game, determined the outcome. United will now play Manchester City in the semifinals thanks to the victory.
United had an early advantage and had a chance to grab the lead in the opening two minutes, but Diogo Dalot’s first-time effort from inside the box went over the crossbar. In the 21st minute, Antony’s lovely curling goal handed United a well-earned lead after their persistent pressure had finally paid off. At halftime, the score remained 1-0 despite the home team continuing to produce chances that they were unable to finish.
Charlton came out more aggressively in the second half and had their greatest opportunity of the game, but Scott Fraser’s shot went high over the crossbar. At the other end, United remained a threat, and Charlton goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer made a superb stop to maintain the score at one. It appeared as though United’s lead would hold as the game neared its final minutes, but Rashford came off the bench and scored two precise goals to give United the win. He now has 15 goals this season across all competitions after his two goals, and he has now scored in eight straight home games for United.
Manchester United Making It A Great Season
The victory was United’s to earn, and the youthful team performed admirably, especially in the first half. The 17-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo made his debut during the game, and Argentine center defender Lisandro Martinez made his first start since the World Cup final. With Aston Villa out in the quarterfinals, the result sets up an intriguing semi-final game between Manchester United and Manchester City. A highly anticipated clash between the two Manchester clubs is scheduled to take place in the upcoming weeks.
