Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool is but a mere shadow of the team that was last season as they slumped to another defeat at the hands of Chelsea. This marks their fifth successive defeat at home, a first for the Merseyside club.
How Low Can Things Go For Liverpool?
Liverpool’s talismanic striker Mohammed Salah was substituted at the hour mark. His frustration at the manager’s decision seemed to show that of the team’s fans at home. Klopp however defended the decision he had made saying that he felt Salah was at risk of being injured as well. Liverpool, of all teams, cannot afford to lose another starting player to injury if they are to have any chances of a top-four finish.
Chelsea, on the other hand, has found a breath of fresh air at the hands of Thomas Tuchel. They have gone 10 games unbeaten since the German had taken over from Frank Lampard. The directionless and struggling players from Lampard’s time are proving their worth once again in the blue jersey.
Mason Mount scored the only goal of the game with a spectacular run brushing aside the Liverpool defense. Timo Werner also seems to be getting closer and closer to being the striker he was at RB Leipzig. He had managed to find the back of the net after another mistake by Alisson but it was flagged offside after a VAR review. N’Golo Kante was fortunate to not give away a penalty when he handled the ball in the second half.
Liverpool, though, is now trailing Chelsea, and fourth place in the table, by four points. They are also points-wise doing worse than Moyes’ disastrous first season at Manchester United, having managed to earn only 43 points from 27 games. Klopp must have been reminded of how his team had once dominated the opposition just like Chelsea did on the day.
