Recent TikTok videos and viral posts have sparked widespread speculation about a federal stimulus check of $2,000 or more arriving before the holidays. The claims have raised hopes, but financial experts and government officials are urging people to temper their expectations.
Why a New Stimulus Check Is Unlikely
Stimulus payments are typically reserved for times of severe economic downturn, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. During that crisis, stimulus checks were essential to keeping households afloat and boosting consumer spending. But according to LendingTree senior economist Jacob Channel, the current economic conditions don’t justify such measures.
“While some people might feel the economy isn’t perfect, overall, it’s in solid shape. Consumer spending is strong, and the situation doesn’t call for emergency financial interventions,” Channel explained to CBS MoneyWatch.
Past stimulus payments were authorized during times of extreme financial distress. Former President Donald Trump signed two rounds of stimulus checks during his administration, and President Joe Biden authorized a third in early 2021. But with inflation stabilizing and unemployment low, there’s little momentum for another round.
The IRS has also cautioned Americans to be wary of social media rumors about financial programs. In a February 2024 statement, IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel warned that scammers often exploit platforms like TikTok to spread false information. “These scams can mislead people into bad decisions. Always rely on official government sources for accurate updates,” Werfel advised.
For now, the chances of a holiday stimulus check appear slim to none. Instead of getting swept up in the rumors, experts recommend focusing on financial planning and consulting trusted professionals. Don’t let misinformation derail your holiday season.
