International students are making an unprecedented economic impact in the United States. In the 2023/24 academic year, these students contributed a record-breaking $43.8 billion to the U.S. economy, supporting over 378,000 jobs and creating a vital connection between global talent and American growth.

The Economic Power of International Students

New research from NAFSA and JB International reveals that for every three international students, one U.S. job is created or supported. This impact is felt across the nation, with states like California, New York, and Texas leading the way in economic activity. Twelve states have now broken the $1 billion mark in contributions from international students, accounting for 57% of the total economic output.

The boost isn’t just financial. International students also support key sectors, including STEM research and innovation, while enhancing U.S. institutions’ global competence. As competition for top international talent grows, the U.S. must adopt proactive policies to ensure it continues to attract and retain these students. This could include expanding visa opportunities and creating pathways to permanent residency for graduates.

With international student numbers on the rise—especially from India, which surpassed China in 2023—it’s clear that the U.S. education system thrives from global engagement. However, as Fanta Aw from NAFSA cautions, the U.S. cannot afford complacency in maintaining this vital economic engine.
