Nusrat Choudhury Becomes The First Muslim Woman Federal Judge

Nusrat Choudhury became the first Muslim woman federal judge in America. Nusrat Choudhury was confirmed by the US Senate as she joined the federal judicial bench. Choudhury also became the first Bangladeshi American to become a federal judge given her Bangladeshi lineage. In 2022, President Joe Biden appointed Choudhury along with seven others as federal judicial nominees.

On their nomination, in a statement by the White House, it was stated that the nominees continue to fulfill the promise of President Biden to make sure that the diversity of the country is reflected in its courts as the greatest asset. Choudhury formerly was a civil rights attorney. Previously the Biden-led administration had confirmed and appointed Zahid Quraishi as a federal judge in 2021, he was the first Muslim American to become so. 

Nusrat Choudhury is all set to join Eastern New York District’s US District Court, which recently handled the indictment of Republican House Representative of New York, George Santos. Santos had been charged for money laundering and fraud. 

Nusrat Choudhury Has Worked On Police Discrimination Against American Muslims

Nusrat Choudhury in her works, has been a strong advocate against police discrimination of American Muslims. Choudhury is the legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union in Illinois. She has in her works, challenged the policies of surveillance of the New York Police Department and the Milwaukee Police Department on their policy of stop and frisk. These policies have been highly criticized as discriminatory against the American Muslim population. Anthony Romero, the executive director of the ACLU has stated that Choudhury as a civil rights lawyer is a trailblazer, in advocating equal justice for all Americans. Choudhury has now become the second Muslim federal judge after Quraishi.
