With the NFL season starting on Thursday night, there’s no better time to take a look at which teams are likely to have open coaching spots in 2023. Here are some franchises that could be looking for new head coaches in 2023.

The Los Angeles Chargers have a lot going for them. They have Philip Rivers, who is still playing at an elite level despite being 37 years old. Melvin Gordon and Keenan Allen are both Pro Bowl-caliber players. Hunter Henry is one of the best tight ends in football when healthy (he’s injured).

NFL Coach Openings

The Chargers should be able to compete for a playoff spot as long as they can avoid injuries to key players like Rivers or Allen, who missed almost all of last season with injury issues.

The Detroit Lions are still in the process of rebuilding their team after having a few rough years and a lot of turnovers. They have hired Matt Patricia as their head coach, who will be tasked with leading the team out of its current state.

The Lions have made some very good hires on offense, bringing in former Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels as their new offensive coordinator and former Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams as their new defensive coordinator. These two should help improve Detroit’s offense and defense respectively this season. On special teams, they have also brought in former Patriots special teams coach Joe Judge to be their special teams coordinator, which should help them improve on that side of the ball as well.

The Panthers are one of the most intriguing coaching jobs in the NFL. They have a top-tier quarterback in Cam Newton, who can make up for a lot of mistakes on his own. With that said, this team has very little talent around its star QB, so it’s hard to imagine them making a significant jump under any new coach.

Ron Rivera might be back next season after having gone 5-11 this year, but if Carolina hires someone else he could be shown the door quickly.
