Stimulus Checks will be delivered to the residents of Onondaga County.

Onondaga County’s Executive Ryan McMahon has announced that 11,000 seniors will be getting a $200 check this summer.

The checks are part of McMahon’s plan to use the county’s senior population as a way to stimulate the economy and provide additional economic stimulus in Onondaga County. “Our seniors are really hurting right now,” McMahon said in an interview with WAER News. “We know they’re struggling financially, so this is just one way we can help them.”

The checks are not just a one-time thing; they’re something we want to continue on a yearly basis because we think this is something that seniors deserve, said Sharon Moynihan, director of Onondaga County Department of Aging & Independence Services. “It’s often overlooked but it’s important for people to know what services are available to them.”

The checks only apply to those who received the Property Tax Relief Program known as STAR or the Enhanced STAR program, which is for low-income senior homeowners. The checks will be mailed to recipients on July 6, according to Onondaga County spokesperson Sarah Faughnan.

“This is a one-time payment and does not include any other assistance programs,” she said in an email statement sent on June 27. “It does not replace any benefits that you may currently receive.”

Those eligible for the program should expect the checks to arrive either in July or August.

The stimulus checks will go out to those who received the Property Tax Relief Program known as STAR or the Enhanced STAR program, which is available to seniors 65 and older with incomes of $86,000 or less.
