The winners of the Sundance 2022 film festival were announced and Nanny won the top prize, winning the US Grand Jury Award. Other films to make it to the winner list included Navalny, The Exiles, Utama, All That Breathers, and Cha Cha Real Smooth.
Nanny is from Nikyatu Jusu who wrote and directed the movie and has Anna Diop in the role of Aisha, a woman from Senegal who is a nanny with a New York’s Upper East Side family. She struggles to save enough to take her son, whom she deeply misses, to the US.
Member of the jury, Chelsea Benard said that the film could not be confined to any particular genre. She said that it had stunning visuals, had strong acting, and was deftly helmed by Jusu to give its viewers a thrilling experience.
Accompanying Chelsea Bernard on the juror’s bench on the American Competition films were Payman Maadi and Marielle Heller.
The Top Documentary Award At Sundance 2022 Went To A Documentary On The Tiananmen Massacre
The top documentary prize was taken by Violet Columbus and Ben Klein’s The Exiles tracks down 3 dissenters from the massacre at Tiananmen Square, who lives in exile. It will finally bring closure on a film that Christine Choy abandoned in 1989, that was being shot with Renee Tajima-Pena.
Utama won the Grand Jury Prize for drama, while All The Breathes by Shaunak Sen won for the documentary.
Cha Cha Real Smooth won the Audience Award given to a US Dramatic title at the Sundance 2022 film festivals, which was picked up by Apple right at the festival. The US Documentary prize was taken by Navalny. Tabitha Jackson, the festival director said in a statement that Sundance 2022 once again reached out to the audience right in their homes. She said that whether you saw from one of the 7 giant satellite screens or from your home, the Sundance 2022 film festival conveyed a strong convergence of moviemakers, the audience, and the whole community.
