Wednesday night was the final episode of ABC’s long-running drama A Million Little Things, and in typical A Million Little Things style, it was a bomb.
The popular D.J. Nash television show about finding family and friendship forewarned viewers in advance that they might need Kleenex for the conclusion. A Million Little Things, a drama series by DJ Nash, came to a tragic conclusion when one of the close friends at the center of the story committed suicide. While everyone was shocked by Jon’s suicide in the premiere, Gary’s (James Roday Rodriguez) demise in tonight’s series finale had been anticipated as Gary had Stage IV lung cancer, which was terminal.
A Million Little Things’ Ending Was Spectacular
Gary had formed a bargain with Rome and Eddie to die “with dignity” if the anguish grew overwhelming, as revealed in the finale. Gary, who could no longer talk, invoked the pledge by penning “Rutledge,” the friends’ primary work for assisting each other’s families. Eddie and Rome both battled with Gary’s request but eventually granted it by obtaining the necessary medications. Maggie was ultimately the one who prepared Gary’s fatal doze after seeing a video he had shot of her communicating his desires.
The other friends and their kids were assembled for a “big fat dinner,” as Gary requested, and were laughing and telling stories about him while Gary and Maggie lay snuggled close as he took his dying breaths.
When the series came to a close, Javier, their 16-year-old son, was learning to drive from Maggie and watching the farewell video Gary had recorded for him before he passed away. The kids of Gary, Eddie, Jon, and Rome attended a hockey game with the two of them and snapped a selfie together, exactly like their fathers did many years ago. The two then joined the group of friends.
