Add Alex Borstein to the list of celebrities who dislike seeing themselves on film. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel star earned many Emmys for her portrayal in the critically acclaimed comedy, but she’s never seen it herself.
“I haven’t seen this show. “I’m not joking,” she says to Entertainment Tonight. “I saw the first 2 episodes [of the first season] because we went to a global premiere in Berlin and were in a theatre when they started playing it and we were stuck.” Borstein’s avoidance of the Prime Video blockbuster is more than just a dislike of watching oneself act—it’s a deliberate decision to protect her performance when the program was still in development.

“I can’t watch it while I’m doing it because it changes me,” she says. “Anything observed is altered, and I alter my behavior.” I won’t like how my hand looks, so I’ll hold it for the remainder of the season. It’s so horrible that I have to wait. I’ve been waiting this long.”
Alex Borstein is far from alone in this condition, albeit various actors have varied reasons for not seeing their work back. According to Michelle Williams, observing herself in a role detracts from the priceless experience of truly being in the role.
