The POTUS, Joe Biden, called for the release of the detained citizens and journalists abroad at the White House Correspondents’ dinner on Saturday.
After that, he went on to poke fun at everything- from his age to Elon Musk. He began by stating that the members of the administration wanted to send a message to the world that the free press was a pillar of a free society- and not the enemy. The audience at the White House Correspondents’ dinner at the Washington Hilton did represent some of the high-ups in the Biden administrations. Some of the officials seated were First Lady Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. The event also had celebrities like John Legend and Chrissy Teigen.

Joe Biden also spoke about his reelection campaign priorities, and the issues that he had previously discussed- the economy, and the ongoing war in Ukraine. But Biden did put special emphasis to talk about the wrongfully detained Americans abroad. The dinner on Saturday took place just about a month after the arrest of Evan Gershkovich, an American citizen and a Wall Street Journal correspondent based in Moscow. The US went on to designate him as being wrongfully detained by Russia.
Earlier during the week, the US had introduced certain new sanctions on Russian groups and Iranian militia that had been accused of taking Americans hostage as the Joe Biden administration tried to prevent more captive-taking, and potentially secure the release of citizens that had been detained currently. Along with the gravitas that accompanied his speech, Biden also used this rare chance to flex his comedic muscles as he made jokes about the recent scandals that were plaguing former President Donald Trump.
