New England announced possibly the most stunning move in the present pre-season period. Mac Jones has been announced as the new starting QB. Veteran Cam Newton was released on Tuesday.
A Surprise Promotion For Mac Jones
Bill Belichick, the coach, had repeatedly assured that Cam would remain the starting QB of the team. However, he had also said that it was Cam’s duty to solidify his role. He could lose it if someone played better. Belichick seems to think that Mac Jones is the better one now.
Mac Jones had ended the preseason with a score of 36 out of 52 and having run 389 yards. He scored 1 touchdown, no interceptions, and played 107 snaps. It was by far the largest total among the quarterbacks of the New England Patriots.
Cam Newton was the starter in every game in the preseason. But he only had 39 snaps, indicating how little he played overall. His statistics at the end of the preseason were: 14 out of 21, ran for 162 yards, 1 touchdown, and 1 interception.
Newton was one of the captains of the team. After his release, Mac Jones will now have an opportunity to become a leader without being pressured by the ex-NFL MVP. Brian Hoyer, a veteran, is expected to be the first backup to Mac Jones. He was released on Tuesday because of a procedural move. However, he should be resigning soon. Jarrett Stidham, the 4th round pick in 2019 will be a probable option in the future when he recovers from his injury.
Mac Jones had put in an extremely impressive performance during a joint session involving the Giants. On Sunday, Jones had said that he was getting ready to be the starter, but he was also prepared for any other possibility.
