Manchester United lost their second straight Premier League game in just four days as they were beaten by West Ham at London Stadium with a score line of 1-0. Initially, after losing to Brighton on Thursday, United went on to drop more points in the league race for the top four after their shot-stopper David De Gea’s howler gifted the Hammers a victory. This ensured their survival in the Premier League as they now have 37 points, which should be good enough to avoid relegation.
Manchester United’s League Problems Don’t Seem To End
Interestingly, Ten Hag’s team did start well and they had quite a lot of chances in the first 15 minutes, but it was West Ham that took the lead after Said Benrahma’s weak shot from around 20 yards was slotted into the net by De Gea himself. The good news for Manchester United is that if they managed to win the last three home games against Chelsea, Fulham, and Wolves they would find themselves in the Champions League the next season.
The bad news, on the other hand, is that they have ended up looking like a team that has run out of steam at the wrong moment. On their behalf, this was their 57th game of a very grueling campaign and the signs have started to show as they have managed to win just twice in the last eight games in all competitions. For them, the finish line can’t come soon enough.
Liverpool has already staged a comeback and is just a point behind in the race for the top four, but Manchester United has a game in hand and could still be the favorites to qualify for the Champions League title. What seems to be concerning for the fans and players alike is that a battle that should have been far easier seems a lot more nerve-racking right now. On the other hand, West Ham has already reached 37 points and should consider themselves safe from the relegation battle.
