Marc Short, former VP Mike Pence’s chief of staff, appeared before a House committee last week in private. The committee is looking into the attack on the US Capitol on Jan. 6, which is the latest twist in weeks of talks between the panel’s investigators and Pence’s team.

Marc Short Revealed Crucial Information

According to three persons familiar with the situation, Marc Short appeared in response to a subpoena from the committee. As a result, he is the most senior member of Pence’s entourage known to have assisted with the investigation.

Pence rejected former President Donald J. Trump’s pressure campaign. So, investigators believe Pence’s participation and that of his close circle are crucial. He attempted to exploit his position as the official count of electoral votes in Congress to overturn the 2020 election.

Marc Short was with Pence when a mob of Trump fans stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, and he had personal knowledge of Mr. Trump’s and his associates’ efforts to persuade the former vice president to throw out valid electoral votes for Joseph R. Biden Jr. in favor of phony pro-Trump electors.

For months, investigators have been in high-stakes talks with Mr. Pence’s team about whether he would participate in the investigation.

They’ve been attempting to enlist the help of Marc Short and Greg Jacob, Mr. Pence’s former lawyer, in recent weeks.

Mr. Pence’s national security advisor, retired lieutenant general Keith Kellogg, also spoke before the committee. On the morning of Jan. 6, Mr. Kellogg and Ms. Trump witnessed a phone call in the Oval Office in which Mr. Trump pressed Mr. Pence to go along with a plan to toss out electoral votes, according to Mr. Kellogg. The president had chastised Mr. Pence for not being “aggressive enough” to reverse the result, Mr. Kellogg told the committee.
