The first-ever woman speaker of the US House announced the end of her 20-year period in office leading the House Democrats. Nancy Pelosi made the announcement one day after the GOP announced that they have taken control of the lower house.

She decided after the Democratic Party succeeded in preventing an expected GOP surge in the lower chamber, though the Republicans managed to finally end on a majority.
Pelosi informed the House Chamber that she would not be seeking reelection in the next Congress for the Democratic leadership post.

The decision also comes weeks after the vicious attack on Paul Pelosi, her husband, at their home in San Francisco, when she was away. Nancy Pelosi remains in Congress for one more term, representing the San Francisco district.
