When Can New Mexicans Expect Their 2023 Stimulus Check? Tax Rebate Payments Approved In Legislative Session

The series of stimulus checks given by the federal government in response to the economic downturn following the pandemic ended in 2021. But the situation continued to be desperate even in 2022 primarily due to record inflation. Prices of everything from groceries to gasoline touched record levels. State inflation relief payments brought some respite, but the situation continues to be grim in 2023.

While most state-sponsored inflation relief stimulus checks dried up in 2022, some continued for the first quarter of this year. But they were more a result of delays than any plan to extend the stimulus checks beyond 2022.

California was among the states that reported delays in the payments. The Middle-Class Tax Refund payments were planned for the festive season. But the payments were delayed because the preloaded debit cards could not be sent through the US Postal Service in time. With postal delays stretching to three to four weeks, the payments could finally be completed only in March 2023.

But a handful of states have opted to continue giving some form of aid to residents. And the same goes for a handful of states that have experimented with the concept of a minimum guaranteed income. Cities such as Stockton and Los Angeles in California have been at the forefront of experimenting with the concept of minimum guaranteed income.

New Mexico Announces Another Round Of Stimulus Check

New Mexico was among the first states to announce inflation relief stimulus checks. It was in the middle of 2022 that New Mexico returned around $673 million to eligible residents. Rebate checks of up to $1,000 were credited to the bank account of eligible residents as early as the second week of June 2022. The state returned over $675 million to New Mexico taxpayers as it took advantage of a huge fiscal year surplus from rising oil prices.

As oil prices remained high throughout the nation, the southern state bordering Mexico was in an advantageous position. Governor Michelle L. Grisham of New Mexico said that it was important for the democratic government they share in the success of the state. While tax rebates by states are not uncommon, New Mexico remains just one state that is sending out stimulus checks again in 2023.

The $1,000 stimulus check will go to those whose filing status in 2021 was as head of household, married and filing jointly, and as a qualifying widower or widow. For single filers or married couples filing separately, they can expect a payment of $500. For those whose filing status in 2021 was married and filing jointly, the rebate payments will be sent to the primary taxpayers listed on the income tax returns for the state in 2021.

Qualifying For The New Mexico Stimulus Check In 2023

Tax filers who have filed their New Mexico personal income tax returns for 2022 by May 2024 will automatically receive the stimulus check from the state government. Resident filers who have chosen to receive their 2021 state tax refund through direct deposit can expect to receive their tax rebate payment similarly.

Every other eligible filer will receive their stimulus check from the state of New Mexico through paper checks mailed to the address that they have entered in their file. Residents who are listed as dependents on their income tax returns for the state in 2021 do not qualify for the income tax rebate given by the New Mexico government in 2023.

Those who are not required to file a New Mexico income tax return in 2021 will still receive the economic stimulus check even if they are not normally deemed eligible for the income tax rebate. For instance, such cases may arise if you have not received non-taxable income such as the Social Security check.

But they will have to apply to receive the payment when the application remains open. Funds will be limited in such cases. Officials of the New Mexico government have said that residents who are not required to file their income tax returns because of their income should apply as early as possible once the application dates are open. The relief payments to such beneficiaries are expected to be sent in July this year.

Residents of the southern state should start keeping an eye on their bank account from mid-June if they have filed their income tax return for 2021. Those who have changed their direct deposit details since they have filed their state return for 2021 or have not received their stimulus checks through direct deposit should not be unduly perturbed. They can expect their stimulus check through the US postal service in the last week of June or early July.

The New Mexico stimulus checks for 2023 will be based on the state tax returns for New Mexico in 2021. And the administration will rely on the information and detail supplied during that filing. This includes bank details, such as account number and bank name, as also home address and phone numbers. If any of this information has since changed after filing the income tax return for 2021, these changes would impact your chances of getting the stimulus check in time. You should immediately notify any changes to the authorities through the proper process.

New Mexico did not have the option of updating any information linked to direct deposit to receive the rebate checks for 2023. So those whose address or other personal details have changed since they filed their income tax return for 2021, should get it updated with the Revenue and taxation department of the state. This will ensure that you get the stimulus check on time and at the right address.

For those who were eligible for the 2022 New Mexico rebate stimulus check but have not received it, you should contact the Taxation and Revenue Department of the state and seek assistance. Another state that is sending out a one-time stimulus check is Alabama. The residents of the state will receive a $300 stimulus check based on their tax filing for the state for 2021.
