This Wimbledon, Serena Williams was gunning to make history. But it all came to a tearful end in the very first round of the tournament. She had no other option than to quit early in the match with Belarus’ Aliaksandra Sasnovich since he sustained an injury on her leg.

A Sad Departure For Serena Williams

The American tennis player, 29, was leading 3-1 in the game. Serena Williams’ right thigh was strapped right from the match’s start. But during the game, she slipped two times. After that, it was clear that the pain was serious.

Serena Williams attempted to carry on with her trainer outside. Nevertheless, her bid to equal the all-time 24 grand slam titles record of Margaret Court ended right there. She finally retired when the score became 3-3. Sasnovich later said that she felt very bad for Serena. She looks up to her as a champion but this is a common occurrence in tennis.

For many viewers, it was difficult to see Williams in tears and in pain. She had put in tremendous work to get back to the court. She had taken a break of 3 months after the Open in Australia. However, Serena Williams had finally made her return with an appearance on a clay court. She had then played 3 events, one of which was the Open in France. She had managed to reach the 4th round.

For Wimbledon, she did not play any warm-up matches on the grass. However, her rank as the sixth seed and her history made her one of the favorites alongside Ash Barty, the top seed. Now, it is unknown if Serena will be back on the court again.

However, her older sister Venus fared better. The 41-year-old was victorious in the first match with Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu. This was her first Wimbledon Championships win since 2018.
