Stimulus Checks

As the United States struggles with the economic consequences of the COVID-19 epidemic, numerous states have stepped in to provide financial assistance to their inhabitants in the form of inflation relief stimulus checks. The United States Congress approved the first of three direct stimulus checks to Americans in 2020, but the federal government has not revealed any plans for additional stimulus payments since then. As a result, many states have begun to issue credits and payments to their inhabitants, each with its own set of conditions and payment levels.

Residents in the Midwest, notably Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, have mainly been excluded from these state-level reimbursements for stimulus checks, with the majority going to states on the East and West coasts. However, people in two Midwest states may still be able to receive a last-minute inflation relief stimulus check.

Stimulus Checks In Illinois & Indiana

In 2023, Illinois citizens could get up to two separate payments as stimulus checks from the state. The first is a $50 income tax rebate for single taxpayers or $100 for joint filers, and the second is a $300 property tax credit. To qualify for these stimulus checks, residents must be Illinois residents with an adjusted gross income in 2021 of less than $200,000, or $400,000 for joint filers. The rebates began going out in September 2022, and payments are continuing into 2023 for those who haven’t yet received them.

Indiana began issuing tax refunds as stimulus checks of $125 to eligible singles ($250 to joint filers) in May 2022, with no income restriction. In late August 2022, a second batch of stimulus checks in the amount of $200 per qualifying taxpayer began to be distributed via direct transfer. Payments are still being withheld from state residents who only qualified for the $200 reimbursement. That money will only be delivered to taxpayers who file a 2022 tax return and claim it on their taxes before January 1, 2024.
