The tragic death by fatal shooting of Ajike “AJ” Owens, a Black mother of four, has led to a significant legal outcome. On June 2, 2023, Owens was shot and killed by her 60-year-old White neighbor, Susan Lorincz, in a dispute over neighborhood children playing near Lorincz’s home. As Lorincz faces sentencing today, Owens’ family is calling for the maximum penalty under the law.
A Tragic Dispute Over Children
The shooting occurred after an ongoing conflict between Owens and Lorincz, who had confronted several children, including Owens’ own, for making noise and leaving toys outside her apartment. On the night of the incident, Owens went to Lorincz’s door to confront her, but the situation escalated when Lorincz shot through the door, killing Owens instantly.
Lorincz was convicted of manslaughter with a weapon in August, a verdict that carries significant weight for the Owens family. In a statement, they expressed their hope for a strong sentence, saying the conviction was an important step toward justice. Lorincz could face up to 30 years in prison for the fatal shooting.
The case also brought attention to Florida’s controversial Stand Your Ground law, which allows individuals to use deadly force in self-defense. Lorincz’s defense team argued she acted out of fear for her life, claiming that Owens threatened to kill her while banging on her door. However, the prosecution argued that the situation did not justify the use of deadly force, as there was no imminent threat to Lorincz’s safety.
As the sentencing approaches, Owens’ family seeks closure, hoping the legal system will deliver justice for the senseless loss of a mother and beloved community member.
