Borussia Monchengladbach scored thrice in the first 21 minutes to defeat the German champions Bayern Munich, 5-0. The game was played on Wednesday which dumped Bayern Munich out of the German Cup, in the second round.

Borussia’s dream start saw 2 goals from Ramy Bensebaini and 1 from Kouadio Kone. This put them in the driving seat before Breel Embolo scored twice in the second half and sealed off the game.

They became the first team to score five goals against the mighty Bayern Munich since Borussia Dortmund’s 5-2 win in the 2012 German Cup final, and the first-ever team to score three goals in the first 21 minutes against Bayern in a German Cup game.

This was also the first time that Bayern Munich had lost a game by 5 goals since the 9th of December, 1978 against Fortuna Dusseldorf in the Bundesliga. They were beaten 7-1 that day.

Bayern Munich Sports Director Was Absolutely Disappointed With The Result

Hasan Salihamidzic stated that he was absolutely shocked by the result. They were just not present in the game and could not win a single tackle in the entirety of the first half.

Everything that could go wrong, went wrong for them while Gladbach did their things really well. Bayern Munich was absolutely not there. It was a complete blackout.

Bayern Munich had scored a record 33 goals in 9 league games and have added another 12 goals without conceding any in 3 Champions League matches, were the overwhelming favorites.

They needed just 80 secs to open their account with Kone pouncing on a sloppy pass by Alphonso Davies to beat Manuel Neuer. With the Bayern defense in complete disarray, the hosts should have scored again with Jonas Hofmann and Embolo coming close as the defensive efforts by the visitors piled up.

This shocking result also snapped Bayern Munich’s 85-game scoring streak, the longest such stretch for any team in Europe’s top-five leagues during the time.
