Liverpool’s exit from the FA Cup has plunged their season into further turmoil. Jurgen Klopp’s side have now lost four of their last five matches, leaving them struggling in the Premier League and out of both domestic cup competitions.
Their performance against City was a microcosm of their season. With the Reds a goal down, they offered very little attacking threat, only managing one shot on target throughout the entire match. Even when City were reduced to ten men, Liverpool’s lack of creativity and cutting edge was evident, as they could only muster a single shot in the final half hour.
This is in stark contrast to the Liverpool team that last season were crowned Premier League champions, and European champions the season before. They have been hampered by injuries, but their lack of depth and form have also been major factors in their downturn.
The Reds will now be hoping to turn their season around in the league, where they currently sit sixth, seven points off the top four. However, given their recent form, this is looking increasingly unlikely, leaving their Champions League chances in the balance.
Liverpool Is Not The Only Club In Trouble
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich are also in crisis, with their 3-2 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt leaving them 12th in the Bundesliga. This is the first time the reigning champions have been this low in the table since 2009.
The Bavarians have been hampered by injuries, with star striker Robert Lewandowski, who has scored a remarkable 41 goals this season, being among those who have lost significant time. The leagues seems to be totally out of the league for the club now.
It remains to be seen if either of these two former giants can turn their fortunes around, but both are in need of a spark of inspiration if they are to challenge at the top again.
