Real Sociedad beat Manchester United 1-0 in E Group playoff on Thursday at the Old Trafford to get their Europa League campaign off to a bad start.

Manchester United players observed a moment of silence before the initial whistle to pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on Thursday.

Cristiano Ronaldo, starting for Manchester United for the first time since the 4-goal defeat against Brentford on August 13, appeared to have put the hosts ahead after 36 minutes, but his goal was called out for him being offside.

No goals were scored, and the initial half finished goalless, with ETH replacing Christian Eriksen with Bruno Fernandes and Martinez with Dalot at halftime.

Manchester United Concedes From A Penalty

Soon before the hour, a shot from Silva deflected from Martinez’s leg and then hit his arm. The referee had to point to the penalty spot instantly. The penalty for handball was upheld, and  Mendez beat DDG to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

Ten Hag went back to his bench for an equalizer, this time putting on Sancho, who had scored in United’s victory against Arsenal on Sunday.

La Real won the game to take first place in Group E, while Man United is third after Sheriff, who defeated Omonia in their first encounter.

At the final whistle, the Sociedad team and supporters celebrated loudly as Imanol Alguacil’s team earned their first win away over English opponents in any European competition.
