Senator Mitch McConnell appeared to have frozen for a moment at a campaign event in Covington, Kentucky when he was asked by a reporter regarding his plans of running for reelection in 2026. This was the second time that the 81-year-old Republican seemed quite unable to speak in public in a little over the last month. At the press conference that took place in Northern Kentucky on Wednesday, McConnell trailed off completely and then paused after he was asked if he would be running for reelection. A staffer then joined the Senator on the stage and then repeated the question for him.
Mitch McConnell Fumbles While Answering Reporters’ Questions
During this, the six-time Senator simply held on to the podium silently for about 30 seconds and didn’t answer the question posed to him. After this moment of confusion, Mitch McConnell then fielded a couple more questions.
In one of his responses to a question about Daniel Cameron, the Attorney General of Kentucky, and his bid for governor to unseat Andy Beshear, the current Democratic Governor, McConnell thought that it would be a very close race. When he was asked about the indictment of former President Donald Trump, he stated that he wouldn’t be commenting on presidential races. Both of these times, one aide went on to repeat the questions of the reporters to the Senator.
According to Stephanie Penn, the spokesperson for McConnell, the senator had been feeling a little lightheaded during this new conference. A member from the office of Mitch McConnell stated that he would be consulting a doctor before he started his next engagement. Dr. Brian P. Monahan, Congress’s attending physician, stated that he had already consulted with the Senator and conferred with his own neurology team.
