Oprah Winfrey And Maria Shriver: A Grounded Friendship That Has Lasted A Lifetime
Oprah Winfrey first met Maria while she was working at WJZ-TV. She was in for the morning cut-ins while Maria was in the evening magazine section. They stuck up a conversation in the bathroom which Winfrey recalls was a ‘divine moment,’
That grounded friendship has carried on through a lifetime, spanning their entire career. Other than Gayle King, and Bob Greene, Oprah Winfrey admits that she doesn’t have many friends. She has also known Gayle for 42 years.
She never expanded that small circle till recently. Winfrey says that she became friends with a few people only in the last 5 years.
Shriver has described her bonding with Winfrey as deep, simple, loyal, consistent, honest, and true. Winfrey’s simple gestures such as bring her coffee had helped strengthen those bonds. She says that in many ways, they have mothered each other.
Greene, another close friend from days past, has been her personal trainer and had helped Oprah Winfrey through her wellness journey. He had also appeared on her show. Winfrey says that Greene had never judged her and had understood her from the start.
Winfrey remembers the turmoil she underwent when she decided to start her channel, OWN, giving up her long-running talk show. Shriver had then stood by her like a rock during those difficult times. She had even surprised Winfrey with a performance of Snatam Kaur, one of Winfrey’s favored singers.
