Real Madrid’s La Liga Title Hopes Burnt By Real Sociedad

Real Madrid

Real Madrid’s minute hopes of winning La Liga were extinguished as they lost 2-0 to Real Sociedad- who are aiming for a Champions League spot.

After a combative first half, Real Madrid fell behind when Eder Militao’s defensive blunder allowed Takefusa Kubo to slide the ball into an empty net after the former tried to catch Courtois with a backpass and missed. Madrid’s woes also spilled onto the ground as Dani Carvajal, their trusted right-back was sent off for two quick bookings. The home side was led by veteran midfield maestro David Silva, and they sealed a deserved win with Ander Barrenetxea, the substitute firing a second goal in the last second.

Real Madrid’s La Liga Hopes Are All But Dead

This loss has left Real Madrid around 14 points behind Barcelona as they now have just 5 games left to play. On Tuesday, the team from Camp Nou managed to overcome the stubborn resistance of 10-man Osasuna to earn a 1-0 win courtesy of a late strike by Jordi Alba.

Interestingly, the match between Madrid and Sociedad had the former without several key players- Karim Benzema was benched, and so were Vinicius Junior, Luka Modric, and David Alaba, as they went against the fourth-placed team in San Sebastian. Since this title does seem to be out of their reach, the team from Madrid now has their sights on the Copa del Rey final which will be played on Saturday against Osasuna.

Despite the lack of four starters for Real Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti’s men did start quite confidently against Real Sociedad. Alex Remiro, the keeper, had to make a stunning save to stop the Los Blancos from taking a lead through Militao. But the fourth-placed team didn’t let up on their own, as they played with energy and aggression, and started to take control- through which they created multiple opportunities before the break.
