USWNT Advances To Olympic Semis Via Penalties

It was a fantastic performance from the US Women Football Team. They went neck to neck with the Netherlands in the quarter-final match at the Olympics. The game swung like a pendulum from one end to the other. Both the teams were held to a 2-2 stalemate after the completion of extra time. The match then went into the dreaded penalties. The Americans had the last laugh here.

The Americans started their campaign with a shock defeat. They were defeated in the opening match 3-0 by Sweden. However, they soon pulled up their socks. The team thrashed the kiwis 6-1 and held the Australians to a 0-0 draw. They finished second in the group and qualified for the knockouts.

The game was dominated by the US in the early part of the game. Much against the run of play, the Netherlands scored the opening goal. A stunning volley from Vivianne Miedema put the Dutch in the lead. The US caught up soon, equalizing in the 28th minute via Sam Mewis. Lynn Williams gave the Americans lead but soon the Dutch came back to make it 2-2.

The USWNT had their hero in their goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher. She was phenomenal under the bars. She guessed correctly to deny the Dutch twice. This gave a huge advantage to the US. Megan Rapinoe held her nerves to take the US to victory. They will face Canada in the semi-finals.
