UN Climate Summit 2022: Biden Speaks Of A More Assertive Role For America

UN Climate Summit

US President Biden highlighted the danger posed to the world by global warming at the UN Climate Summit and assured that the US was committed to meeting emission targets.

He spoke of a global drive to stave off the worst consequences of imminent climate change despite distractions like the war in East Europe and the unrelenting inflation assailing the world economy.

President Biden stressed that the US would meet its emission targets and assured that the 2030 cutoff date was very much on. The concurrence of the world’s second-biggest emitter of greenhouse gas is vital if the whole effort is to succeed, though China remains recalcitrant about its commitments despite it being the world’s greatest polluter.

Before he arrived at the UN Climate Summit, the US administration revealed its national plan to bring down the emission of methane from the US oil industry. Methane remains one of the maximum dangerous greenhouse gases. The drillers’ lobby in the US continues to resist attempts to rein in the oil industry.

Developing Nations Have Already Pledged To Honor Their Commitment At The Un Climate Summit

The European Union too issued a joint declaration with the US at the UN Climate Summit and was joined by Canada, Norway, Britain, Japan, and Singapore as they pledged more steps to contain methane emissions from the oil industry.

That announcement was meant to further last year’s international deal and which was signed by 130 nations with the pledge to bring down emissions by 30% across the economy by the end of this decade.

Biden said that the best way to achieve the 2030 goal would be to cut methane emissions by 30% as agreed upon at the US Climate Summit. He said that the war in Europe could not be a justification to shy away from meeting the norms.

He stressed that it is important that all nations stick to their commitment. He said that the war only enhanced the urgency for the world to move away from its reliance on polluting fossil fuels.
